A Sublime William IV Period Ebonised & Bobbin Turned Library Wing Armchair c.1830-40Origin: English Period: William IV Provenance: Unknown Date: c. 1830 40 Height: 40 Seat Height: 16 Width: 25 Depth: 28 (all at extremities) The good quality whole of generous proportions, consisting of all over bobbin turnings in ebonised beech featuring an unusual wing back, the fluted frieze with carved roundels under a seat of deep proportions upholstered in ivory cotton fabric, with a tapered drop in squab cushion, the whole on further bobbin

They were once hunted extensively for their meat and eggs

It is difficult

The splendiferous colours on show remain very vivid

especially those with the inset ‘Ruskin Jewel’

He made no secret of his working-class sympathies (which is perhaps why this sculpture was created showing a lower class boy in strife) and having identified himself too publicly with the Paris Commune of 1871

As the artist spent eight years of his career in England it is possible that this piece was created in England and modelled on an English youth rather than a French one
